Competitive gap analysis

On this page

Competitive gap analysis in the Track My Visibility application shows the prompts where a competitor is mentioned in AI answers and your brand isn't. It turns "a competitor is beating us" into a clear list of prompts to work on.

Each prompt in the gap is a question your buyers ask, where an AI model recommends a competitor and leaves your brand out. Closing these gaps is one of the most direct ways to grow your AI visibility and share of voice.

How to find your competitive gaps#

Open the Overview dashboard and find the Competitive Gap card. It lists each competitor with the number of prompts where they're mentioned and your brand isn't. Open the full view to see the details.

How to read a competitor's gap#

For each competitor, you'll see:

  • How many prompts mention the competitor but not your brand.
  • How many AI answers that adds up to.
  • Each prompt, with the AI models that mentioned the competitor.
  • Each answer, with its date and a short excerpt.

How to close a gap#

Step 1. Pick one competitor#

Start with the competitor you lose the most business to, or the one with the biggest gap.

Step 2. Read the answers#

Open a few answers that mention the competitor. Check how the competitor is described and which sources were cited.

Step 3. Choose the fix#

If the competitor wins because of a page on its own site, use Content gaps to improve your matching page. If the competitor wins because of other websites, use Authority and trust signals to get your brand mentioned on those websites.

Step 4. Track the prompts#

Tag the prompts in the gap, then check them again over the next few weeks.

Why competitors win prompts#

Competitors usually win a prompt for one of these reasons, listed from most to least common:

  • They appear in the roundups, reviews or comparison articles the AI model cites.
  • They have a page that answers the exact question, and your brand doesn't.
  • They are described more clearly and consistently across the web.
  • AI crawlers can read their pages, while yours are blocked or slow.

Frequently asked questions#

Competitive gap analysis in AI search is the list of prompts where AI models mention a competitor and don't mention your brand. In Track My Visibility, the Competitive Gap card on the Overview shows these prompts for each competitor you track.

Why do AI models recommend my competitor instead of me?

AI models usually recommend a competitor because the sources they cite mention that competitor more often or more clearly. Open the answers in the gap, check the cited sources and compare the competitor's pages with yours.

How do I find prompts where my competitor ranks and I don't?

Open the Competitive Gap card on the Overview dashboard and select a competitor. You'll see every prompt where that competitor is mentioned and your brand isn't, with the AI models and answers behind each one.

How long does it take to close a competitive gap?

Closing a competitive gap usually takes several weeks, because AI models need to read new or updated sources before their answers change. Tag the prompts you're working on and check them on each new run.

What is the difference between competitive gaps and quick wins?

Competitive gaps are prompts where a competitor is mentioned and your brand isn't. Quick wins are prompts where your brand is already mentioned on one AI model or in a lower position, so they are often easier to improve.
